Who We Are
First Parish in Malden is a Unitarian Universalist (“UU”) church in Malden, Massachusetts. UU’s include people of all ages, many different backgrounds, and many beliefs. We come together with our shared values to create a spiritual community based in love. We welcome everyone as their whole self, with all your truths and your doubts, your worries and your hopes.
UU’s include people of all ages, many different backgrounds, and many beliefs. We come together with our shared values to create a spiritual community based in love.

Our congregation is unique because:
- Our minister is queer & trans, as are several of our staff members
- 5/7ths of our governing board is queer and/or trans.
- 25% of the congregation identifies as transgender or non-binary.
- We have several queer holidays that we celebrate throughout the year, including an annual Pride service, Drag Easter, and Pie Sunday.
- Our main restroom is gender free & wheelchair accessible
- We have pronouns on everyone’s name tags
- Proud sponsor of Pink Haven, a collective of organizations and individuals who are committed to trans liberation and joy and to growing community defense, mutual-aid, and alternative systems of care for gender diverse people since it began.
- Sponsored or co-sponsored all (a)gender clothing swaps for several years (started in 2017)
- Served as a host site for Building Beloved Community Beyond the Binary (BBCBB), a day of creating community with transgender & nonbinary folks, their families and allies.
Our Values
Love is the power that holds us together and is at the center of our shared values. The values we share include all the following, which we hold as inseparable and deeply interconnected:
- Interdependence: We honor the interdependent web of all existence and acknowledge our place in it.
- Pluralism: We are all sacred beings, diverse in culture, experience, and theology.
- Justice: We work to be diverse multicultural Beloved Communities where all feel welcome and can thrive.
- Transformation: We adapt to the changing world.
- Generosity: We cultivate a spirit of gratitude and hope.
- Equity: We declare that every person is inherently worthy and has the right to flourish with dignity, love, and compassion.
Our Covenant
As a community, we promise to celebrate, care for, and challenge our true and imperfect selves. Together, we will show love for each other and the greater world through our words, actions, and traditions.
What to Expect
When you arrive you will be greeted by an usher and given an order of service, which will tell you what to expect during worship. Choose a seat wherever you feel comfortable.
Our worship services usually include singing, a sermon, a time for people to share their joys and concerns, readings, and prayers. Each week we take an offering which we share with a community organization, we ask that first time visitors allow the offering plate to pass them by. You are welcome to participate as much or as little as you like in each aspect of our service.
Following the service, the congregation gathers together in our fellowship hall for “Coffee Hour” which consists of snacks, coffee, and conversation.
We are easily accessible by public transportation (Malden Center on the Orange Line) and have ample parking at the Beebe School lot.
Children are always welcome during worship with us. We also offer Religious Education classes during our most of our services. We provide childcare for children under age five during all services.
Our worship space is wheelchair accessible and we have a bathroom on the main level that is accessible, gender neutral, and equipped with a changing table. The accessibility ramp is by the parking lot at the back of the building.
People who come to our church dress in a variety of ways. Many wear jeans or dress as they would during the week. What’s most important is that you are dressed in a way that feels comfortable and authentic to you.
